Arc stud welding is popular because of what it offers: the ability to quickly and efficiently join a metal stud to one side of a metal work piece without marring the other side. Dependability and ease have made stud welding one of the most utilized methods of  fastening on offshore platforms and shipyards across the globe.
Arc Stud Welding
PFS offers arc weld studs in a broad variety of shapes and sizes. The stud diameters we make available range from 1/8 in. (3.2 mm) to 1¼ in. (31.8 mm), and we can provide studs of any length to meet individual specifications.
PFS arc weld studs are manufactured from AISI 1006-1020 low-carbon steel, 300 series stainless steel, and 5000 series aluminum, along with an arc stabilizing and deoxidizing flux. Low-carbon steels can be arc stud welded without metallurgical problems, provided the carbon levels do not exceed 0.03%.
Be sure to keep in mind that steel with a carbon content greater than 0.03% must be evaluated before attempting to arc weld—and when planning to stud weld medium- or high-carbon steels, preheat must be used in order to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zones. As always, the most important factor regarding the area you are working on is the material in that zone must be heavy (thick) enough to permit welding the studs without melting through. Base material must be one-third the thickness diameter of the weld stud.
Every arc stud carried by PFS is manufactured to meet the standards of the most respected associations within the offshore, shipbuilding, and steel fabrication industries, including the American Welding Society, ASTM, the U.S. Navy, and the American Bureau of Shipbuilding, as well as the Department of Highways and Transportation in all fifty states.
